Government reconstitutes RMG central fund

The Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) issued a gazette notification outlining the 16-member board, which includes the labour secretary, presidents of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), and the president of Jatiya Sramik League Nur Kutub Alam Mannan as four Vice-chairmen.

The remaining 11 members of the board include the inspector general of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), Director Generals of the Department of Labour and Central Fund, two BGMEA Vice Presidents – SM Mannan Kochi and Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, Executive President of BKMEA Mohammad Hatem, and Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of Bangladesh Employers Federation Farooq Ahmed.

From the workers’ side, Sirajul Islam Rony, president of Bangladesh Garment Sramik Karmachari League, Syeda Khairun Nahar Tamrin, joint General Secretary of Mohila Sramik League Central Committee, Kawsar Ahmed Polash, President of United Federation of Garments Workers, and Sultan Ahmed, President of Bangladesh National Labour Federation, would be the board members.

The government established the central fund for the RMG industry, with exporters contributing 0.03% of their freight on board prices to the fund from July 1, 2016.
